The recent Italian legislation on educational matter has allowed the Universities to deliver courses for the development of high level scientific, technical and managerial expertise.
These courses, called “Masters” are open to graduated people (five years of University education, that correspond to degrees of different names in different countries, for II level Master, three years of University education for I level Master) and are jointly organized by Academia and Industry in order to better address the educational and training need of the job market.

In this context, the Scuola di Ingegneria Aerospaziale of the Università di Roma ” Sapienza”, active in the aerospace field since 1926, offers for the second year the Master course in Satellites and orbital platforms, (Master of II level) organized with the support of aerospace agencies, aerospace companies and public bodies interested in developing an advanced professional education and training activity in cooperation with the academia.
The Master aims at responding to the need for advanced education in the space sector, especially towards the development of both technical and managerial capabilities and skills. The scenario for future space based activities – and the potential new products and service to be developed in this context – the tradition of  Scuola di Ingegneria Aerospaziale “Sapienza” and the presence of a significant network of important aerospace companies in the area of Rome can be considered as important factor for the success of the initiative.
A graduate degree in Engineering (5 years) is the typical requirement for attending the course that has a duration of one year (full time) and corresponds to 60 academic credits.
The Master course in Satellites and orbital platform proposes to develop courses and stages directed to a system vision on the satellite, in particular oriented to the bus-system, the payloads, the organization of the companies involved in the manufacturing of the system and in the offer of the related services.
The Master is intended for students who wish to improve their technical background and professional skills in the understanding of the conception, design, implementation and operation of complex high performance space systems, with an emphasis on the mission objectives and relevant economic and managerial aspects.
The Master is oriented in particular towards the new markets of the peaceful “space based” services in the area of remote sensing, telecommunication, navigation, that are very promising in terms of benefits for the population and for the improvement of its daily life standards. In fact the expected increase of the relevance of space based services and application, such as navigation and Earth observation, requires professional figures that are able to comprehend the full chain of value of the service and the critical technological opportunities and limits.
The Master course is offered to a limited number of student selected in an open competition. In the Master program the Università di Roma ” Sapienza” cooperates with the public bodies and the companies interested to define and develop the content of the course.
The companies share with the academia the responsibilities of lecturing, offering stages and logistic support. Scholarships are also made available for the students attending the course.
In the academic year 2003/2004 scholarships were made available by Alenia Spazio, Telespazio, Vitrociset, Oerlikon Contraves, Space Engineering, IMT, Italbrokers, Kaiser Italia, CSM. Esa offers stagiaire position for living expenses during the stage at Estec. ASI speakers will be available for classes in different topics.
